SH 66 over Turner Turnpike

Client & Owner: Oklahoma Turnpike Authority

Turner Turnpike Br. No. 68.2 (SH 66 over Turner TP) is located in Creek County, near Bristow, OK. The project involved the construction of a new bridge on an offset alignment, the widening of a State Highway bridge culvert, and the realignment of roughly 4000 ft. of Route 66 and 3300 ft. of local roads in the area. The project was let in August of 2010 at a cost of $8,900,000 and was completed in the Spring of 2012. The new bridge over the Turner Turnpike is comprised of 4 steel plate girder spans (112′-136′-136′-112′) crossing the Turnpike on a 30 degree angle. The original bridge, known as the “Grasshopper Bridge” was constructed in the 1950’s on a very sharp angle using non-conventional substructure components. With limited lateral and vertical clearances, and multiple scars from over-sized vehicles, the original bridge had to be replaced to open up the path for the future widening of the Turnpike. An article about this project was published in the September 2012 issue of “Modern Steel Construction”.  This project stands as the largest single contract completed by W2M Consulting.
