Douglas Blvd. over I-40

Client: Triad Design Group

Owner: Oklahoma Department of Transportation

Located in Midwest City, Oklahoma – Douglas Blvd. crosses over I-40 and carries traffic into the Main Gate of Tinker Air Force Base.  Traffic congestion on Douglas and I-40 below prompted a significant design study to determine the most effective solution for replacing this structure while improving traffic flow.  Several options were evaluated with a final solution to replace the existing bridges with a Single-Point Urban Intersection bridge (SPUI), making it only the 5th of its kind in Oklahoma.

A Single-Point Urban Intersection bridge is a wide structure with one set of traffic lights (generally mounted on the bridge) to control all the traffic movements through the intersection.  This project is being built over multiple phases of construction and includes the lowering of I-40 to provide for vertical clearance, with the construction of the bridge that is comprised of two (2) 94’ Prestressed Concrete Beam spans.  The completed bridge will be nearly 241’ wide and will accommodate eight (8) lanes of traffic with dual turn lanes on each corner.  Vertical abutments and a non-standard pier design were included to accommodate the “Freedom Corridor” themed aesthetics on the project.

Allen Contracting is the contractor for this bridge, which is currently under construction and comes in at a cost of $12.5 Million.
